Knowing what animals were associated with the different gods and goddesses will help you match up figurines in a music box. There’s one point when you have to learn a few Greek letters in order to solve a code. Some of the puzzles Nancy has to solve involve things like putting together a Greek temple and choosing the right classical architectural elements to decorate it with. I’m a bit of a mythology buff, but I still found that I learned something new. One thing I did enjoy about the game was its focus on Greek myth and art. The one time I got caught at it and was called out, I felt genuinely bad-but Nancy did not.

Cracking someone’s tablet password or pulling the lining out of someone’s bag really isn’t okay, even if it’s in the name of solving a mystery. In the game, it felt more like she was just being obnoxious and invasive, and worse, since the player is Nancy, it felt like I was being obnoxious and invasive. As the audience we can read about her doing something we know she probably shouldn’t, and recognize that this is a character with flaws. But somehow in the books it makes sense-her curiosity can’t be contained.

I know, I know, that’s what Nancy Drew does. Which brings me to my next complaint, which was Nancy’s snooping. She’s a tiny bit creepy, no? Wait till she talks. When playing master sleuth, no hints are available, and the puzzles are even harder. (And boy, did I waste a lot of time.) There are difficulty settings (amateur and master) and I was playing on amateur, to give you a sense of the difficulty level. I wasn’t confident enough to ever know that I was doing the right thing, and the idea that I could be wasting time trying to solve something that I didn’t have the key to yet was infuriating.

That’s where Nancy Drew fell apart for me most of the game involves running around trying to figure out the solution to the solution. Put me in front of a puzzle where half the problem is figuring out what to do with it? I’ll last…maybe 10 minutes. Put me in front of a puzzle where I know all the rules, and I’ll tinker with it for hours. Most of the time it came down to my lack of patience-I tend to get burnt out on puzzles pretty quickly, especially when I’m not sure what the next step is. Some of the puzzles took me far longer to solve than I would’ve liked, and I often had to reach for hints. Meanwhile, you must solve a lot of complicated puzzles and uncover keys, notes, invoices, secret doors, and trinkets.įirst of all, this game is hard. Or maybe I’m just not built for sleuthing.

It becomes clear as you speak to the characters (actors in a play and a museum curator) that there’s something sinister going on.

#LABYRINTH OF LIES MOVIE REVIEW SERIES#
You are Nancy herself, wandering around a museum in Greece, trying to solve several mysteries at once-namely, a series of art thefts. The recreation of a post war Germany quietly trying to rebuild itself and march to a new kind of state drum roll are elegantly recreated by the director, Giulio Ricciarelli and the film ends up, despite all its disappointments and false starts faced by the young lawyer, of being quite a moving drama.Nancy Drew and the Labyrinth of Lies is a point-and-click adventure game based on, you guessed it, the Nancy Drew series. Though there's very little violence in the film, just people reading Nazi-written descriptions of events that happened in the camps has a blood curdling effect. Before he knows it or wanted it he realizes he's taken an enormous bull by the horns. Fortunately we have the idealistic young lawyer, Johann Radmann (Alexander Fehling) working for the Frankfurt city government to tend to the matter once he becomes alerted to the fact that a ruthless Nazi commandant is currently teaching children at an elementary school but the young lawyer is soon inundated by the denial of the culprits who slipped right back into German middle class life without a faretheewell and the other Germans who just don't want to have to hear it and remember it. Of course, it wouldn't have been half so easy had not the Nazis themselves been such ferocious note takers of every inhuman act they performed and the Americans kept and filed away afterwards. It's the early 60s and there are still people who when asked what "Aushwitz" was say, "Oh, it was a POW camp just like the British, French and Russians kept prisoners of war in." So, obviously even in West Germany the process of de-Nazification took a long time to penetrate a lot of thick skulls and denial. No one should be surprised that even Germany had to cocoon itself with a thick layer of barbed wire to keep from having to face what the country not only had just been through but many had actively and enthusiastically participated in.
